In this series, we will explore how artists throughout history have used light and shadow to tell stories and invoke certain emotions in their audiences. From Caravaggio’s dramatic use of chiaroscuro to Rembrandt’s direction of attention through light, we will analyze how light may illustrate isolation, drama, or even mystery.
Each class will focus on two or three paintings, and participants will be encouraged to share their own insights and interpretations of the visual techniques used in these pieces.
