Dave & Kathy: Laughter & Games are the Best Medicine for You

Have you ever thought of your retirement life? Maybe tour around the world, choose to move to a new place, or do something you want but didnโ€™t have time and money in the past.

Yet, for some, like Dave and Kathy Knox, facilitators at our Virtual Senior Center (VSC), retirement is an extension of their lifelong commitment to giving back, a testament to the idea that making a difference doesn't stop with age.

Retirement Wonโ€™t Stop Our Pace

Before joining VSC, Dave volunteered in person locally. The pandemic made him try virtual volunteering. Initially, he started a game class, Dealer's Choice Poker. He wasnโ€™t sure if it would go well or not. Surprisingly, participants really liked it, which gave Dave the confidence to start two new game classes, Casino Blackjack, and What's My Job.

Inspired by Dave, Kathy joined the VSC in 2022, bringing her expertise in teaching Improvisation from her time at a local university. Despite the similar hesitations, she found that the members were not only receptive but eager to dive into the activities she presented. "I was really impressed with their knowledge and how well they picked up this activity we were doing," Kathy shared, reflecting on the joy of witnessing the participants' growth and enjoyment.

When I asked them why they chose to volunteer after retiring since they could choose anything, their answers were: play the audio below to hear why. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Inspirations From The Online Communities

Switching to the virtual volunteer is a new experience. This mode of engagement is more flexible and inclusive, allowing those restricted by mobility or geographical barriers to participate. For Dave and Kathy, the virtual environment did not diminish the sense of community and, in many ways, enriched their volunteering experience.

While volunteering to lead classes for the VSC members, Dave and Kathy also feel inspired and encouraged by them. Dave said, โ€œWe have one person who might be 95. She absolutely loves the poker class. And she's not afraid to go there and do things.โ€ They mentioned that membersโ€™ enthusiasm and willingness to try anything impress them most.

After each class, our members will leave some comments. Click the audio below to hear what the journey of Dave and Kathy! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Reflecting on their experience, the Knoxes express a desire to see more young people get involved in volunteering, especially with the elderly. The pandemic highlighted the isolation faced by older adults, as well as the importance of connection and community. As Kathy said, โ€œOne of the things I enjoy the most is making people smile. Because I really believe that laughter is the best medicine for you.โ€
